Bella the Dog and Tara the Elephant

For those of you who don’t know the story it bares repeating.  It is a story of friendship, commitment, love, and loss. Anyone who has ever doubted an animal’s ability to feel and express emotion need to look no further than this odd couple in Tennessee.

Tarra is a female elephant from Myanmar (Burma). A member of the endangered Asian elephant family, Tarra was one of the last elephants to be imported to the U.S. legally.

Tarra retired to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee after 21 years in show business. There she was to live out the remaining decades of her life exploring the expansive refuge.

Then one day Bella showed up and the two became constant companions. They ate together, slept together, played and explored the grounds of the sanctuary often going for swims and basking in the sun.

Their inspiring, “odd couple” story was featured on CBS News and in “Bark” magazine when Bella suffered a spinal injury and Tarra waited patiently outside the sanctuary office while she recuperated.

Sadly Bella was attacked by coyotes this past October and passed away. Today, Tarra continues to heal and grieve with the help of her elephant and human friends bur their story will always be remembered.

Canine Chatter. That is what I call the constant noise that surrounds me during the day. I shouldn’t expect anything less than lots of noise since we chose to have four rescues than run, play and are very active every minute of the day. Andy loves his own antics and today he is up to them again! I was trying to record a video this afternoon for a new webinar I’m holding next week and Andy constantly jumped in front of the camera, on the camera and on me!

Andy is all puppy and he plays all day. Finally calming down around his dinner time I thought I would finally be able to sit back and relax without having the ever present tennis ball in hand.

Then I started wondering why he was so quiet. Nothing, not a sound. Very unusual indeed. So off I go looking for the quite and this is what I found!

Labs4Rescue Participating in Adoption Event

Just got this notice from Labs4Rescue and thought I would pass it along. All events held at PETCO in Clinton coincide with their National Adoption Weekends so hopefully they will get a great turnout. Are You Eddies Forever Home?

Eddie is a 6 month male Vizla mix puppy who was rescued as a stray in Memphis by Kerry, my roommate of many years. Eddie is friendly and well-socialized with a medium activity level. Loves to run and play outside, but then settles down quickly in the house. Likes to go for walks, loves to be with people, enjoys being pet and brushed.

Eddie loves other dogs and would benefit from having a canine buddy in his new home. Fine with cats. Great with kids and recommended for children 6 years and older. Good on a leash, rides great in the car. Knows basic commands. Would love to Housebroken and crate-trained. No issues such as separation anxiety, chewing or barking. He weighs about 40 pounds, is healthy, altered and up to date  with his shots.

Eddie is currently living with foster parents in Enfield, CT. Until Eddie is adopted you can also Virtually foster Eddie for free through Save a Dog and earn points that translate into real donations to rescue groups! Visit here to Virtually Foster

This US Postal Service Has a Beautiful Soul Working For Them

A friend of mine from the Madison Lions Club sent me this and I had to post it.

This is one of the kindest things you may ever see. A letter was posted without an address and it landed in the dead letter office of the US Postal Service. No one knows who took the time to answer the letter written by a little girl who was heart broken over the loss of her best friend Abbey. The words below are those actually spoken by Meredith and transcribed by her mom. If only we knew the name of the kind spirit who responded to her.

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

“Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith”

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies.’ Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.  I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love, God”

Natural Dog Food CT Has New Official Photo!

Check out cheryl campbell-dogs

Presented By http://www.josephs.com

We had a really fun photo shoot the other day when we tried to get the perfect shot to use for our website and holiday cards. We were rained out 3 separate times before and didn’t know what to expect since  the sky was dark and gloomy.

Have you ever tried to get four dogs and two humans to sit still long enough to get a good photo? For the first half of the session we concentrated on getting Blu, Milly, Peach and Andy to sit still and by our side long enough to take a decent shot. Of course they did not want to sit still and when they finally did they refused to look toward the camera and stared at us instead. Believe me when I say it was comical how Joseph, our photographer made gestures and sounds I have never seen or heard before just to grab their attention!

We finally had some descent shots to work with for the official website picture but we weren’t done yet.  Ian our 19 year old wanted nothing to do with the web shot but did agree to be in the Christmas Card picture. We figured the pups had about enough of the posing thing so Joe was going to get a decent shot of the three of us and then “Copy and Past” the dogs into it. Of course now that we didn’t want the dogs in the shot they were all over us and refused to leave our side!

The hour was filled with a lot of laughter and luck was definitely on our side. Joe got some great shots and the first drops of rain didn’t begin to fall until he was waiving goodbye. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed taking them!

Nine Eleven Rescue Dog Finds a Home

It was September 2001. I had never been around dogs. I had three pure bred cats and a horse. An animal control officer mentioned, in passing, that she had one dog, a yellow lab, to place after the horrific attack.

In passing, I recounted this to my husband. Peter had wanted to do something concrete in the wake of 9.11. When I returned upstairs hours later, Peter said with tears in his eyes, “I want to get the dog”.
It took several calls to coordinate the pick up at the ASPCA on 91st Street. Who knew there would be 12 dogs named Charli in residence there?

“I knew nothing of the enormity of animal rescue.”

I will never forget that moment, that spot in the driveway, when Charli got out of the car calmly, then stopped and looked. “Who are all of you and what do you think of me?” Those were the thoughts I read.

Once in the house, the reality of a large 70lb dog with big feet and big teeth set in. I sat on the floor, and Charli responded by charging and humping me. He scared me further by not wanting to sleep on the floor, but throwing himself up and onto the bed.

The dog trainer came the next day. We found the lesson rote and annoying since it was directed at us, rather than Charli. Plus, Charli listened to everything the trainer said, even though he kept calling him Sam.
On the third day, as I made the turn towards the door with Charli on his leash, his big head looked up and back at me. “I need you to lead,” were the thoughts I read.

Charli our first rescue dog will always be remembered

On the fourth day, the news replayed the Towers imploding. I cried for Charli and his loss and every time I saw it after that, I mourned for him and for his owner, who, I was told had little, lost everything and gave me, who had so much , this gift I did not know existed.

Never one for displays of public emotion, my smile was broad every time I walked Charli. In a town full of dogs children flocked to his large block lab/coonhound head. Adults stopped and smiled.

Charli passed suddenly in January 2006. Now, it was my turn to implode.

But, I had to stay strong because, before his passing, he inspired me to rescue Diego, Camden , Bro D, Trooper and his first sibling, Molly. Each has a sad story, each have or had behavior issues, but each have given a gift and pushed us deeper into the world of dog rescue.. Just like Charles.

Charli is buried along side the spot where he first stepped out to meet us and change our lives forever. We have had as many as 9 dogs at one time, rescued several cats and three horses.

All this because of an ordinary, everyday dog.

Editors Note: Charli passed because he developed Bloat and Joan will be writing more about this in future posts. She will also share some stories about her other rescue dogs. -Cheryl

Love me or hate for this one! My mom sent it to me and I did get a laugh out of it So here it is cute wet dogs and all!

This morning I went to sign my dogs up for welfare.

Natural Dog Food LOL Story

At first the lady said, “Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare.” So I explained to her that my dogs are mixed in color, unemployed, lazy, can’t speak English and have no frigging clue who their Daddy’s are.  They expect me to feed them, provide them with housing and medical care. So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify. My dogs get their first checks Friday.

Damn, this is a great country!

NaturalDogFoodCt.com's Rescue Dog Sunny

Sunny

Meet Sunny NaturalDogFoodCt’s Rescue Dog of the Day

Oh My God! How cute is she?  Sunny is a 6 Year Old Purebred Yellow Female Lab. My Peach was six when she found her way home to us. I can’t take all that beautiful white around her muzzle and those eyes – just one hug please!

Her foster mom says she is one of the calmest and sweetest labs that they have met in a long time. This golden girl is an absolute gem. She knows all of her commands such as sit and stay and walks nicely on a leash.

Sunny loves everyone and is great with other dogs. Sunny is of moderate activity level–she loves to go on walks and to play but she also loves to be with her family and be cuddled and petted. This girl is just the best kisser – she just loves everybody! Like many labs Sunny loves food and needs to lose some weight.

For additional information about Sunny #23 please email Ann Hilchey at ann@labs4rescue.com.

Piper: Natural Dog Food Ct's Pet of the DayNatural Dog Food CT’s Pet of the Day “Adopt Me Please”

Let us introduce to a new series that Natural Dog Food Ct.com is doing.  We are spending our weekends showcasing one or two of the wonderful dogs that are up for adoption through PetFinder and Labs4Rescue here in Connecticut. They are both wonderful groups but since Blu, Milly and Peach came to us from Labs4Rescue we are especially fond of them!

Al and I started Natural Dog Food Ct.com because of our wonderful rescues so I thought maybe this would be another way to help all of the pups that still need a home. You probably know by now that I didn’t cut it as a foster mom because I just had to make a home for every pup that cam our way. I still get the weekly foster list so I thought I could try to still help all those pups in need by showcasing one or two of then every week.

Natural Dog Food Ct.com Introduces Piper

Piper is a gorgeous, approximately 2 year old, yellow female weighing 52 lbs. Piper is a super sweet girl with an awesome temperament and personality. She is great with other dogs and would love a playmate. Piper is very playful and would need an active family that will give her the exercise she needs. She is great with kids but would probably be better in a home with older children as she tends to jump when she is excited. Piper would definitely benefit from obedience training- she is very smart and picks up new commands very easily so training would be very rewarding for both Piper and her new family. She will throw a paw up for a high-five anytime! Being a typical Lab, she enjoys the water and likes to ride in the car. Piper is housebroken, crate trained and knows some basic commands. She is a very sweet and loving girl and would be a great addition to your family. Please contact us if you would like Piper to join your family.

I Simply Couldn’t Resist This Guy…I Hope You Can’t Either!

I know for a fact that “older” and “not adoptable” dogs are the best! Our favorite older dog here at Natural Dog Food Ct.com is Peach. She had three families reject her because of her age.  She looked like she was ten or twelve years old when she came to us. It is a funny thing about a rescue dog, you really don’t know what life journeys they have been on.

Is Peach’s gray hair a result of old age or simply a result of her natural coloring?  I personally believe she earned each and everyone of those grey hairs on the various roads she has traveled. She is such a wonderful dog and so full of life.  I’m sure she can tell many a story. Maybe one day she will tell the tale of how she came to be filled with buckshot.

I digress. My whole point is that with a rescue dog you simple can’t know their age for sure. If we believed what we were told by the Vet when we first fostered Peach it would make her a whopping 16 year’s old!

Let’s Talk Natural Dog Food Ingredients

Many will say that the most important thing to know about Natural dog food in general is that it must be made of human-grade ingredients. What does that mean exactly? Technically it means that they will not put anything in your dog’s food that is not for human consumption as well. Here’s the problem: there is no legal definition whatsoever for the term “human grade” when it comes to pet food. It is a buzz word that has been around since the dog food recall scare back in 2007. We need to dig a little deeper to find out what is best for a healthy dog.

A Closer Look at Kibble and Natural Dog Food Ingredients

Some of the ingredients listed in a variety of dog food are: poultry/poultry meal, chicken, lamb byproducts, lamb byproduct meal, avocado, corn, carrots, brown rice. It all sounds relatively healthy doesn’t it? Well here is some additional information that will make you think twice: One manufactures that promotes their kibble as a healthy and natural dog food has Avocado as an advertised ingredient. They Proclaim:

“Why the avocado? Many of the nutrients your dog needs for a healthy skin and coat can be found in the remarkable fruit known as the avocado. Nutrient rich avocados contain vitamins A, E and C in abundance. They’re also an excellent source of balanced nutritional essentials for your dog’s skin and coat health—and good health in general.”

Well, this is what the ASPCA had to say about avocados as a natural dog food ingredient:

“Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as Persin. The Guatemalan variety, a common one found in stores, appears to be the most problematic. Other strains of avocado can have different degrees of toxic potential. They can cause difficulty breathing; fluid accumulation in the chest, abdomen and heart; or pancreatitis.”

Now whose advice are you leaning towards? For a list of other foods you should avoid giving your healthy dog go to: Foods Your Healthy Dog Should Avoid

The Main Ingredients in your natural Dog Food. Now here is where it gets a little tricky:

Is “chicken & chicken meal” and “poultry/poultry meal” the same thing? The answer is a resounding NO!

When a meat source is named such as chicken, beef, venison, etc that is clear enough but what is “meal”? A basic definition of meal is this: consists of meat and skin, with or without the bones, but exclusive of feathers/hair, heads, feet, horns, entrails etc. and have the proper calcium/phosphorus ratio required for a balanced diet.

Contrary to what many people believe, meat sources in “meal” form are not inferior to whole, fresh meats as long as they are from a specified type of animal, such as chicken meal, lamb meal, salmon meal etc.

What about Lamb by products and Lamb byproducts meal? Are they the same? Again the answer is no.

Byproduct meals, even if a species is identified (chicken/beef/turkey/lamb byproduct meal etc.) should be avoided because highly questionable ingredients may be used in these rendered products.

To make it more clear take a look at the chart below. High quality natural dog food should have the ingredients in the right column not the left

Natural Dog Food Main Ingredient Summary

Avoid: Generic Ingredients GOOD: Specifically Named Meats, etc

Meat, Fish, Poultry, Liver, Glandular

Meat byproducts, Fish byproducts, Poultry byproducts, Liver byproducts, Glandular byproducts

Meat byproducts meal, Fish byproducts meal, Poultry byproducts meal, Liver byproducts meal, Glandular byproducts meal

Meat and Bone Meal, Fish and Bone Meal, etc.

You get the picture!

Chicken ,Chicken Meal

Beef, Beef Meal

Turkey, Turkey Meal

Lamb, Lamb Meal

Duck, Duck Meal

Venison, Bison, Salmon, etc.

Other things to avoid:

  • Any food that contains corn (ground or otherwise) as a first ingredient, especially if corn gluten meal is also a main ingredient and no concentrated source of identified meat protein (e.g. chicken meal, lamb meal etc.) is present.
  • Corn gluten or soy(bean) meal as main ingredients. Note: Not all dogs tolerate soy products! Small amounts, especially of organic soy, are okay as long as a dog is not sensitive. There are only very few products on the market that include high quality soy ingredients, none of them sold at grocery stores or mass retailers.

Keeping your canine friend a healthy dog is confusing in today’s food market so we will continue to discuss the topic here at Natural Dog Food Ct.com Come back and see us soon!

Natural Dog Food- Peach

Natural Dog Food's Peach

Discover if a Natural Dog Food Diet will Help Your Pup Become a Healthy Dog

That’s Peach on the left and I was told to put Peach on a natural dog food diet about two years ago. She was a rescue and we had no way of telling how old she was. What we did know is she was panting all the time and it concerned me. My vet proceeded to tell me she would benefit from a diet of “natural” dog food and gave me a recipe for homemade dog food. I love Peach so I immediately tracked down all the ingredients and then went home and became Cheryl the Canine Chef!

It didn’t take me long to become curious about what ‘Natural dog food’ really means.

I decided to look up the word natural and got the following:

  1. Not altered, treated, or disguised
  2. Present in or produced by nature
  3. Of, relating to, or concerning nature

The problem comes when trying to associate the word natural with dog food. The Association Of American Feed Control Officials definition for “natural” as it relates to pet food is:

“NATURAL… A feed or ingredient derived solely from plant, animal or mined sources, either in its unprocessed state or having been subjected to physical processing, heat processing, rendering, purification extraction, hydrolysis, enzymolysis or fermentation, but not having been produced by or subject to a chemically synthetic process and not containing any additives or processing aids that are chemically synthetic except in amounts as might occur unavoidably in good manufacturing practices.”

Whoa! What the heck does that mean? As if it wasn’t confusing enough other terms popped up in my research.

Other terms for natural dog food kept popping up

Some of the terms I came across where Organic Dog Food, Raw Dog Food and Holistic Dog Food. Since holistic is also a synonym for alternative methods I kind of thought that ‘going natural’ may also refer to turning away from the conventional and using alternative methods instead.

That got me interested in finding out about regular conventional dog food and what ingredients they use in them. A found out a lot! So much in fact I’m going to do a separate article on the topic. I think it is important to understand what is in your ‘regular’ dog food so you can discover the real benefits of feeding good quality food, but I digress!

I finally had to come up with my own definition of Natural Dog Food

“NATURAL…Food that addresses the health and well being of your pet as well as hunger. Derived from human grade ingredients and include sufficient amount of nutrition, vitamins and minerals to offer complete and balanced diet.”  That’s a little better isn’t it?

Here are Some Common Ingredients in Natural Dog Food

  • Hormone free meat
  • Whole Grain Rice
  • Probiotics
  • Omega 6 and 3 Fatty Acids
  • Digestive Enzymes
  • Aantioxidant vitamins
  • Chelated minerals (minerals which are better absorbed)
  • Natural Skin and Coat Conditioners.

I hope that helps to explain a little bit about natural dog food and start you thinking about why you should consider it for your dog. We’ll continue to delve into this topic in additional articles so please come back soon!
